June 16 – Today marks an uncommon joining of secular and spiritual celebration – Father’s Day & the feast of the Fathers of the 1st Council (the Council of Nicea). Here in the United States of America, we take time this Sunday to honor our fathers. Coming in all kinds, we express our gratitude to those men who have assumed the responsibility of fatherhood. On the religious front, we commemorate the Fathers of the First Ecumenical Council. Held in the year 325, this council helped the early Church articulate Her faith in the divinity of Christ. June 17 – Before her death in 2011, Anne McCaffrey made her mark in the world of science fiction and fantasy. Whether exploring the adventures of the dragonriders of Pern, the ships and singers of the inter-related universe of The Brain & Brawn Ship series and the Crystal series, the powers & trials of the Talents Universe, or the many other characters & worlds she created, her stories touched the imaginations of young adults throughout her 40+ year writing period. On this day in 2006, she was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame. Read more about her at the Nebula Awards website.
