May 26 – Here in the United States, today is the federal holiday of Memorial Day. Initially established as Decoration Day, it commemorates US Military personnel who have died while serving. May 28 – Today is the 116th birthday of Ian Fleming (1908), famously known for his James Bond series of spy novels. Prior to taking up writing the series, he worked for Britains Naval Intelligence Division during World War II – experiences that helped inform the stories he wrote. May 31 – Today is the anniversary of Dr. Kellogg patenting ‘flaked cereal’ (1884). For many of us, Kellogg’s corn flakes were a breakfast staple – whether fondly or not-so-fondly partaken of! But the invention of this meal has a surprising history – it was an accidental discovery made in the course of trying to create a healthier morning diet! June 1 – If yesterday was celebrating healthy diets, today’s celebration is of the anniversary of a somewhat less healthy (though perhaps more appreciated) food: Scotch whisky! June 1, 1495 is the date of the first known written referene to a batch of Scotch whiskey. Recorded in the Exchequer Rolls of Scotland is an entry that reads (from the Latin) “To Brother John Cor, by order of the King, to make aqua vitae VIII bolls of malt”.
