June 1 – If yesterday was celebrating healthy diets, today’s celebration is of the anniversary of a somewhat less healthy (though perhaps more appreciated) food: Scotch whisky! June 1, 1495 is the date of the first known written referene to a batch of Scotch whiskey. Recorded in the Exchequer Rolls of Scotland is an entry that reads (from the Latin) “To Brother John Cor, by order of the King, to make aqua vitae VIII bolls of malt”. Happily, scotch whiskey is not reserved to royalty and is widely enjoyed by many. Read about the history of Scotch whisky at the Master of Malt website.
